Compression springs

Open-coiled springs that push back when you compress them. Ends can be open, closed, or closed and ground so the spring stands flat.

What it is and how it works

A compression spring is an open-coiled helix that pushes back when you shorten it. It is the most common spring type, and the one whose drawing is easiest to get wrong: people forget solid height, end type, or the hole the spring has to live in.

Three numbers decide most of the fit: wire diameter, outer diameter and free length. The rate follows from those plus the number of active coils and the material. If you also give a load at a working length, we can see whether the spring will bind before it does the job.

Keep the spring index (mean diameter ÷ wire) between about 4 and 12. Below 4 the wire is hard to coil; above 12 the coil wanders. A free length of four times the mean diameter or more will buckle unless the spring is guided on a rod or in a bore.

We grind ends when the drawing asks for it. Grinding is often skipped on the finest wire in our range.

03 · Variants

Types and ends

  • Closed and ground. Stands flat. The usual precision end.

  • Closed (squared). Last coil sits against the next. Not ground.

  • Open. Plain end. Cheap, and it leans.

  • Open and ground. Ground for a flatter seat without closing the end.

Cylindrical is the default. If the coils have to nest, that is a conical spring.

What we coil it from

Only the grades we actually buy. Tell us the environment and we will pick from this list.

Spring wire materials we buy
MaterialTypical standardWhen to choose it
Spring steel (hard-drawn grades)Typical of IS 4454-1 / EN 10270-1 cold-drawn carbon wireEveryday torsion, extension, compression and wire forms where the part stays dry and the load is not highly cyclic.
Music wireTypical of ASTM A228 / IS 4454-1 grade DHOn request, for small precision springs that need a higher tensile strength than hard-drawn wire.
Stainless steel 302 / 304Typical of ASTM A313 / IS 4454-4Damp, outdoor or electrical work where rust on carbon steel would be a problem.
Stainless steel 316Typical of ASTM A313 Type 316Chlorides or chemical splash. Tell us if the spring will see salt or cleaning chemicals.
Oil-tempered wireTypical of IS 4454-2 / EN 10270-2On request, toward the upper end of our 0.40–2.50 mm range, for general industrial use.

What to put on your drawing

  1. 01Wire diameter
  2. 02Outer diameter, or the hole it works in / the rod it works over
  3. 03Free length
  4. 04Total coils and active coils, if you know them
  5. 05End type (open, closed, closed and ground)
  6. 06Load at one or two working lengths
  7. 07Solid height, if it matters in the assembly

Say whether the spring works in a hole or over a rod, and give that diameter. An OD that looked fine on the desk can jam in a 0.2 mm-tight bore once the coil expands under load.

Closed-and-ground ends are the right default when the spring must stand square. If the wire is near 0.40 mm, ask us before you dimension a grind.

06 · Use

Where this spring is used

Switchgear and MCB contact stacks, small valves and buttons, battery contacts, furniture seats, instrumentation, pens and other light mechanisms. Automotive work in this wire range is usually a detent, a return or a seat spring — not a suspension coil.

We do not make die springs, heavy valve springs or anything above 2.50 mm wire.

07 · Process

How we make it

We coil the body, close the ends if specified, grind the ends when the drawing asks for it, then stress-relieve the batch. Finishing goes through partners. Dispatch is ex-works Talawade.

09 · Questions

FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity?
Usually 5,000–10,000 pcs. Smaller runs are possible with development or setup charges.
How fast do you quote?
Send a drawing, a dimensioned photo or the old spring. We quote within 24 hours.
Can you copy a spring from a sample?
Yes. Send the unused spring if you have one, and tell us where it fits and what it has to do. A used spring may have taken a set, so the free length can be short of the original.
When should ends be closed and ground?
When the spring must stand square and share the load around the last coil. Closed-and-ground is the usual precision end. Grinding is often skipped on very fine wire; we will say so if your wire is at the bottom of our 0.40 mm limit.
What is spring index, and why do you mention it?
Mean coil diameter divided by wire diameter. Keep it roughly between 4 and 12. Below 4 the wire is hard to coil; above 12 the coil wanders and the rate varies. We will flag it on the quote if the drawing sits outside that band.
Will a long, thin spring buckle?
If free length is about four times the mean diameter or more, the spring can buckle unless it is guided on a rod or in a bore. Tell us how it is guided.
What wire sizes do you work with?
Round wire Ø 0.40–2.50 mm. Outer diameter and free length follow your drawing. We do not make heavy springs above 2.50 mm wire, rolling-shutter springs or agriculture springs.
