What it is and how it works

A double torsion spring is two torsion bodies wound in opposite directions and joined by a U-shaped centre loop, from one length of wire. One coil is left-hand, the other right-hand. The loop sits on the hinge pin or bracket and the legs take the load on each side.

Because the two bodies act in parallel, the rate is about twice that of a single body with the same wire, mean diameter and number of coils. The hinge sees a balanced couple instead of a single sideways pull. That is why lids, latches and switch mechanisms so often use this layout.

It is a speciality here. Switchgear and MCB parts in the 0.40–2.50 mm wire range are regular work. The centre loop is the detail that usually decides the fit: width, inside radius and whether the loop is flat or offset.

Same materials as our other springs: hard-drawn spring steel, music wire on request, stainless 302 / 304 / 316, and oil-tempered wire.

03 · Variants

Types and ends

Double torsion spring: two opposite-wound coils joined by a U-shaped centre loopCENTRE LOOPLHRH
Left-hand coil, right-hand coil, centre loop and two legs.

Variants we see on drawings: a wide centre loop that sits over a long pin; a tight loop that clips onto a bracket; legs of equal length; or one short leg and one long one when the two sides of the hinge are not the same.

If you already have a single torsion spring and it keeps walking off the pin, a double torsion with a centre loop is often the cleaner fix — one part, no pair to match.

What we coil it from

Only the grades we actually buy. Tell us the environment and we will pick from this list.

Spring wire materials we buy
MaterialTypical standardWhen to choose it
Spring steel (hard-drawn grades)Typical of IS 4454-1 / EN 10270-1 cold-drawn carbon wireEveryday torsion, extension, compression and wire forms where the part stays dry and the load is not highly cyclic.
Music wireTypical of ASTM A228 / IS 4454-1 grade DHOn request, for small precision springs that need a higher tensile strength than hard-drawn wire.
Stainless steel 302 / 304Typical of ASTM A313 / IS 4454-4Damp, outdoor or electrical work where rust on carbon steel would be a problem.
Stainless steel 316Typical of ASTM A313 Type 316Chlorides or chemical splash. Tell us if the spring will see salt or cleaning chemicals.
Oil-tempered wireTypical of IS 4454-2 / EN 10270-2On request, toward the upper end of our 0.40–2.50 mm range, for general industrial use.

What to put on your drawing

  1. 01Wire diameter
  2. 02Inside diameter of each coil body
  3. 03Number of coils on each side
  4. 04Centre-loop width and shape
  5. 05Leg length and bend on each side
  6. 06Free angle
  7. 07Torque at the working angle, if you have it

Dimension the centre loop the way you would a clip: inside width, radius and height off the coil axis. Then the two bodies: ID, coils, wire. Then each leg.

If the two sides must open to different angles, say so. A photo of the hinge, even without a drawing, is enough for a first quote.

06 · Use

Where this spring is used

On our factory floor the usual jobs are electrical switchgear and MCB mechanisms, small automotive latches and lids, furniture hinges, and instrumentation covers. The same geometry turns up on appliance lids and tool handles.

Agricultural tines and heavy tail-gate springs are often double torsion as well. Those are usually above our 2.50 mm wire limit, so we do not take them.

07 · Process

How we make it

Both coil bodies and the centre loop are formed from one wire, then the batch is stress-relieved. Finishing goes through partners. Dispatch is ex-works Talawade.

09 · Questions

FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity?
Usually 5,000–10,000 pcs. Smaller runs are possible with development or setup charges.
How fast do you quote?
Send a drawing, a dimensioned photo or the old spring. We quote within 24 hours.
Can you copy a spring from a sample?
Yes. Send the unused spring if you have one, and tell us where it fits and what it has to do. A used spring may have taken a set, so the free length can be short of the original.
How is a double torsion spring different from two single ones?
It is one part: a left-hand coil and a right-hand coil joined by a centre loop. The two bodies work in parallel, so the rate is about twice that of one body with the same wire, diameter and coils, and the load on the hinge is balanced.
What do I need to specify on the centre loop?
Width, inside radius and whether the loop sits flat or is offset. The loop is what locates the spring on the hinge pin or bracket. A sketch is enough if you do not have a full drawing.
What wire sizes do you work with?
Round wire Ø 0.40–2.50 mm. Outer diameter and free length follow your drawing. We do not make heavy springs above 2.50 mm wire, rolling-shutter springs or agriculture springs.
Do you make these for switchgear?
Yes. Switchgear and MCB mechanisms are a regular job for our unit, in this wire range.
