What it is and how it works
A torsion spring is a close-wound helix whose legs are rotated around the coil axis. It stores torque, not a push or a pull. That is why the drawing must give a free angle and a wind direction, not only a free length.
This is the spring we make most of. Wire is Ø 0.40–2.50 mm from hard-drawn spring steel, music wire, stainless 302 / 304 / 316 or oil-tempered wire. Legs are bent to the drawing — straight, hooked or offset.
Load the spring so the coils wind tighter. The inside diameter shrinks and the body grows a little along the axis. Put a shaft or mandrel through the ID; a good starting fit is an arbor of about 90 percent of the smallest ID at full deflection. Fatigue cracks usually start where the leg leaves the body, so a generous bend radius there is worth more than an extra coil.
We do not publish a standard catalogue. Every torsion spring is a customer part: your wire, your ID, your legs, your angle.
03 · Variants
Types and ends
Leg forms we are asked for: straight, a simple hook, a 90-degree bend, or an offset that clears a boss. We will form what is on the drawing.
Wind is left-hand or right-hand. If the spring sits over a shaft that is already in the assembly, the wind is fixed by that layout — send a photo of the fit if you are unsure.
04 · Materials
What we coil it from
Only the grades we actually buy. Tell us the environment and we will pick from this list.
| Material | Typical standard | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Spring steel (hard-drawn grades) | Typical of IS 4454-1 / EN 10270-1 cold-drawn carbon wire | Everyday torsion, extension, compression and wire forms where the part stays dry and the load is not highly cyclic. |
| Music wire | Typical of ASTM A228 / IS 4454-1 grade DH | On request, for small precision springs that need a higher tensile strength than hard-drawn wire. |
| Stainless steel 302 / 304 | Typical of ASTM A313 / IS 4454-4 | Damp, outdoor or electrical work where rust on carbon steel would be a problem. |
| Stainless steel 316 | Typical of ASTM A313 Type 316 | Chlorides or chemical splash. Tell us if the spring will see salt or cleaning chemicals. |
| Oil-tempered wire | Typical of IS 4454-2 / EN 10270-2 | On request, toward the upper end of our 0.40–2.50 mm range, for general industrial use. |

What to put on your drawing
- 01Wire diameter
- 02Inside diameter (must clear the shaft or mandrel)
- 03Number of body coils
- 04Leg lengths and the bend on each leg
- 05Free angle between the legs
- 06Wind direction (left-hand or right-hand)
- 07Torque at the working angle, if you have it
- 08Material and any finish
- 09Quantity
Give us the inside diameter, not only the outside. The ID has to clear the shaft at full wind-up. If you only have the old spring, measure the wire with a micrometer if you can; a vernier on the OD is the next best thing.
Torque at a working angle is useful but not required. Quantity and material (or “it lives outdoors / next to a switch”) are enough to start a quote.
06 · Use
Where this spring is used
Typical work from our unit: switchgear and MCB mechanisms, small automotive assemblies, furniture recline and fold hinges, and instrumentation. The same layout turns up on appliance lids, clips and stationery — anywhere a light wire has to return a lever.
We do not make rolling-shutter counterbalance springs or heavy torsion bars. Those need wire thicker than 2.50 mm.
Two-wheeler stands and kick-starts are a common torsion application in Pune. Whether we already make those parts for you is still to confirm.
07 · Process
How we make it
We coil and form the body and legs, then stress-relieve the batch in our furnace. Finishing, if you need it, goes out to partners. Dispatch is ex-works Talawade.
