Conical springs

Tapered compression springs. The coils nest into each other, so the solid height can be as low as a few wire diameters.

What it is and how it works

A conical spring is a compression spring whose coil diameter tapers from a large end to a small end. As it is pressed, the larger coils can seat over the smaller ones, so the solid height can be only a few wire diameters plus the closed ends.

The rate is not a single number. It usually rises as more of the large coils go solid. That is useful on a battery contact or a push-button, where you want a soft start and a firmer finish. It is a poor choice if you need a linear rate over a long stroke — use a cylindrical compression spring for that.

Same wire range as the rest of our unit: 0.40–2.50 mm. Same materials. Ends can be open, closed or ground, independently at each end if the drawing says so.

A barrel (convex) or hourglass (concave) is a cousin of the cone. Send the drawing. If the part is a simple taper in our wire range, that is a regular job.

What we coil it from

Only the grades we actually buy. Tell us the environment and we will pick from this list.

Spring wire materials we buy
MaterialTypical standardWhen to choose it
Spring steel (hard-drawn grades)Typical of IS 4454-1 / EN 10270-1 cold-drawn carbon wireEveryday torsion, extension, compression and wire forms where the part stays dry and the load is not highly cyclic.
Music wireTypical of ASTM A228 / IS 4454-1 grade DHOn request, for small precision springs that need a higher tensile strength than hard-drawn wire.
Stainless steel 302 / 304Typical of ASTM A313 / IS 4454-4Damp, outdoor or electrical work where rust on carbon steel would be a problem.
Stainless steel 316Typical of ASTM A313 Type 316Chlorides or chemical splash. Tell us if the spring will see salt or cleaning chemicals.
Oil-tempered wireTypical of IS 4454-2 / EN 10270-2On request, toward the upper end of our 0.40–2.50 mm range, for general industrial use.

Give both outer diameters and the free length. Say which end sits in the pocket and which end sits on the pin. If the large end must not pass through a hole, say so — that is a go / no-go dimension, not a decoration.

06 · Use

Where this spring is used

Battery contacts, push-buttons, light switchgear, and any pocket that is wide at one end and tight at the other. Instrumentation and small automotive switches use this shape when a straight spring would stack too tall.

07 · Process

How we make it

The coil diameter is reduced along the body as we form it, then the batch is stress-relieved. Ends can be closed or ground if the drawing asks. Finishing goes through partners. Dispatch is ex-works Talawade.

09 · Questions

FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity?
Usually 5,000–10,000 pcs. Smaller runs are possible with development or setup charges.
How fast do you quote?
Send a drawing, a dimensioned photo or the old spring. We quote within 24 hours.
Can you copy a spring from a sample?
Yes. Send the unused spring if you have one, and tell us where it fits and what it has to do. A used spring may have taken a set, so the free length can be short of the original.
When is a conical spring better than a straight compression spring?
When you need a short solid height, or the large end must sit in a wide pocket and the small end on a pin. The coils can telescope. The rate is not constant: it usually rises as the larger coils seat.
Do you make barrel or hourglass springs as well?
Those are other tapered shapes. Send the drawing. If it is a simple cone in our wire range, that is a regular job. Unusual barrels we will confirm before quoting.
What wire sizes do you work with?
Round wire Ø 0.40–2.50 mm. Outer diameter and free length follow your drawing. We do not make heavy springs above 2.50 mm wire, rolling-shutter springs or agriculture springs.
